“What sugar beet varieties should I grow?”
We are often asked the question, “What sugar beet should I grow?” Since the answer is not always a Strube variety, here are some suggestions.
Most growers will choose 2 – 4 sugar beet varieties per season and you should be looking for a portfolio which combines high yield with yield security and perhaps some genetic diversity.
For smaller contracts, we would suggest one reliable variety (Haydn) plus one newer variety. More than one variety adds interest and allows a useful comparison and evaluation in the field.
Medium to larger-sized contracts:
For medium to larger sized contracts, one or two reliable varieties (Haydn+ Cayman or Pasteur plus one or two newer varieties (perhaps Degas, if earlier drilling is foreseen, or Landon, if drilling later).
Contracts with BCN:
For contracts with BCN, we would commend the choice of Daphna KWS or Leesha KWS (if you wish to afford the price), unless you are planning to sow early, in which case choose Thor, the only BCN-tolerant variety proven to be suitable for early drilling. Thor offers BCN control at an affordable price.
