Sugar Beet Variety Development

Sugar beet variety development is a long and drawn out process. It can take up to 10 years to get a new sugar beet variety from source crossing to having the new variety approved. Typically, plants need to be specifically pollinated after labour-intensive manual castrations and the success of a crossing has to be checked with the help of genetic and phenotypic markers. Propagation measures provide for recombination and variations and only after this has been done can we then select suitable plants and sow these lines in accordance with the desired sugar beet variety development objectives – be they increased yield, heat resistance, reduced bolting etc.

Variety Development – Testing, Testing, Testing

Once we have the new sugar beet varieties sown, they are tested for several years at different sites to assess their yield performance and other important characteristics. The testing sites that Strube UK choose aim to represent the areas where the seeds will eventually be planted and reflect a wide range of climate, soils and other conditions such as the risk of beet cyst nematode issues.

It is only by putting our new plants through this vigorous and lengthy sugar beet variety development programme that we can both secure reliably high yields – even under variable conditions – and gain plant variety rights from the national authorities. Recent products of Strube’s approach include the BBRO Recommended List placed Morgan, Stewart and Button, varieties, whose combination of good yield and sugar content prove the efficacy of our variety development programme once again.
